Our new soccer coach
By Zeel Patel
Have you heard that WMS has a new soccer coach? Well it's Mr. Maratea. Mr. Maratea teaches Math Enrichment and Math focus in room 9D, coached the 2013 WMS soccer team for the first time this year.
As a youngster, ages 10 through 12, Mr. Maratea played soccer and he continues to play indoor soccer as an adult. He also enjoys playing golf, softball, and swimming, but just for fun, not competitively. Because he likes working with kids, he was interested in being the WMS soccer coach. To be a soccer player, he says, you need to have good attitude, sportsmanship, know the rules of soccer, and know how to have fun.
The boys' and girls' team had nine games this season with three wins, five loses, and one tie. Mr. Maratea says, "There are no disadvantages of coaching soccer." The advantages are he gets to meet more kids; it's more exercise for him and the kids, and it is outside of school. Coach said he is really proud of the team and he looks forward to being involved again next year.
There were many great soccer players this season including, Shawn Angiletta, Hailey Bernier, Olivia Bischoff, Bryan Brazel, Nick Cardona, Kelvin Cortez, Jeff Dobensky, Jake Donlon, Leonel Garcia, Adrian Gomez-Aceves, Ally Grignano, Patryk Kochanowicz, Ryan Maloney, Caitlin Mayhew, Ismale Mendez, Ryan Niemiec, Lucian Nunez, Alexa Papallo, Josh Perzanowski, Ben Pierce, Flint Rich, Simon Santos, Avery Staggers-Shortall, Zechariah Smith, Stephanie Suarez, Lamar Thaxter, Grace Tompkins, Lea White, Kamar Mullings, and Guadalupe Martinez.. Great season everyone!

Spike it: WMS volleyball
By Amanda Gagne
"Bump, Set, Spike!" The Washington Middle School volleyball team has had a good season this year. The girls on the team worked their hardest, according to Coach Coon. Ever wonder what it is like to be on the volleyball team? If you want to make the team next year, be able to bump, set, spike, and serve. Be a team player, and have the heart of the game--meaning you want to play volleyball and want to be there.
About 65 girls try out each year. If she can, Coach will take 19 or 20 skilled players. There are usually only 8-10 games, but this year Mrs. Coon added Tyrell Middle School in Wolcott, and Maloney High School freshman for a total of twelve games.
Coaching volleyball for 18 years, Mrs. Coon has also coached softball for 20 years. As a high school student, she played volley ball for Washington Middle School, and Maloney High School. Now, she wants to prepare her girls for high school.
What Coach Coon likes about coaching the girls is to see players' skills improve, and that they become better volleyball players. Even though they all have fun on the court, Coach Coon still expects that the girls do well in school, on the court, and represent WMS Volleyball and school when going to other places. Also she says, it is hard to find a person that has the heart of the game, the aggressiveness, and the skills all in one.
