Congratulations to Mrs. Atterberry, the WMS 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Atterberry is our school librarian. She teaches media skills, orders books, and she assists with technology for students and staff. Mrs. Atterberry says she has worked at WMS for 18 years. She said she first taught social studies in Cluster Two and then studied to be a computer media teacher.
She said she feels humbled to receive this award because there are so many amazing teachers who are also very worthy of this title. She said she thinks people nominated her for teacher of the year because she gets to know many teachers and students in the building by being involved in the Global Studies Committee, and Broadcast Club. In addition works with DistrictTect.com.
In her free time, Mrs. Atterberry enjoys creating videos, reading, online scrapbooking, and salsa dancing. The teachers and students are proud of Mrs. Atterberry.

Global Studies: Asia Day
By Valerye Quintana and Jazmine Dummitt
"Ni Hao Ma?" This the Chinese way of asking 'how are you'! On October 17th, a dance group from New York City performed several types of Chinese dances for our school. The group performed in the auditorium for all three grade levels. Mongolian, the first dance they did, was very interesting because I'd never seen anything like it before. A performer from the group, Jessie, said that the Mongolian was a 5,000 year old dance from China. The group also performed an act in which they used chopsticks as instruments and props. This dance was a real shocker for me because we usually see chopsticks used for eating. |
Dancers banged the chopsticks together to make a clicking noise; I thought this was so cool. The group also performed the Peking opera, a 200 year old dance, uses weaponry like swords and acrobatics. Another dance they did, the Chaoshan dance, used fans to create a flapping noise that mimicked the feathers of a crane. It was a real honor to have them come and show us a little about their culture and how they dance.
